:fish1: Hi! I didn't know this section was here, so I've copied in a thread I'd put elsewhere. I am unable to work so spend amy hours working on, or just sitting by, my ponds.

About my ponds:
Do you get frogs? No
Frogspawn? No
Tadpoles? No
Toads? No
Toadspawn? No
Toadpoles? No
Smooth newts? No
Palmate newts? Yes - by the dozen!
Great crested newts? No
Do you have fish? Yes - by the hundreds!
What sort? Goldfish, Koi
Do you have a pump? Yes and no - see below
Filter? Yes and no - see below
Do you have oxygenators? (underwater plants) Yes
Do you have marginal plants? Yes
County/ region or town: Conwy, N.Wales
Type of pond: wildlife/ ornamental/ fish Fish

How big is your pond? 50L, 2 x 200L, 350L
How old? Oldest 4 years

Type of location? City, rural, etc Light urbanisation between rock outcrop and the sea

Anything else interesting about your pond?
It all started with a model railway...... My partner has a garden layout and wanted it to run over a bridge, so we dug a hole in the ground, put in a sheet of liner, planted a few plants to look pretty and installed the bridge.
Then we decided a few fish would be nice, so we bought 6 little goldfish (2" long) 4 summers ago. They grew and grew and grew and (much to our surprise) bred. Only 8 survived from that hatching, but even so the pond was too small for 14, so we decided to buy a formed 200L liner with a ledge around for marginal plants. Another hole was dug, which resulted in a railway embankment for the railway.... The following summer over 300 fry survived. They had stayed on the ledge until they were big enough to be safe to move out to deeper water. So partner decided we'd have another 200L pond with a waterfall between the two (but with seperate pumps & filtration for each). Another hole was dug and a mountain side for the railway to climb... I decided to reclaim the area of the little pond & thankfully I didn't just chuck earth in. As I drained it, I discovered palmate newts from about 3/4" to 4" long. Panic! I had destroyed the habitat as the pond drained, so ended up with 27 newts in a bucket of mud. That's when the 350 L pond arrived. This time I left it above ground, with rustic fencing and logs around the front and a stone wall at the back. This pond has no pump or filtration. I put mud and all the plants I could into the pond, then filled it with a some water from the other ponds and rainwater from our barrels. I left it 3 days then put the newts in. They have bred for the last 2 years. Hopefully they will again. Hedgehogs overwintered in the log pile last year. There are 5 Koi in one of the ponds now and we have given away more than 400 goldfish since we started our "accidental" breeding programme. We could do with taking out 30 - 50 at the moment if anybody would like them? I'm in N.Wales, near Llandudno. (Sorry for the essay!)
PS. Today I've discovered a colony of bees nesting in the stones at the pondside!

Are there anyone on here who can enlighten me on the intricacies of the male stickleback as regards the parental duties he undertakes in the breeding season? The reason i ask is that i have a breeding male in my tank and he has built a fine nest of strands of weed and duly courted his females(two of)to the nest and followed them in when they have laid the eggs and obviously fertilised them, after what seemed like an age these have now hatched and there are numerous tiny fish inching around the nest area which the male guards diligently still, getting to my question now, sorry its a long-winded affair lol! How long does the male defend his young like this and also does he have more than one or two broods in a season?

I ask these questions because i cannot get any info on google and i think its fascinating behaviour and thought you guys would like to know too.
Many thanks as ever for your indulgence.

We have 2 smooth newts in our pond, normally they seem to be quite happy at the bottom and occasionally coming up for air. But today we witnessed some peculiar behavior on the part of one of them: at about 9:30 this morning it climbed onto the lining not quite under a rock and stayed there untill about 5:00ish this evening. The it (she i think) went to perch on a lilly pad for about 10 mins, then swam to near the edge and sank. Occasionally she wriggled a bit but then will go motionless and sink again. She is now lying under another rock but is not totally conciealed again.
Is this normal behavior?????

While visiting a good mate last week, we were walking the dog past a large village pond when we suddenly realised that we were surrounded. There was no escape. No way out. A billion (at least) titchy baby frogs were making a break from the pond and had decided that... the baking hot and hard road was the way to go. Numpties.

So, we spent at least an hour scooping them up and taking them back to wet grass near the pond, and we even picked up a plastic cup and frognapped about 30 of them to whisk (not literally.. imagine the mess) back to his pond.

This lil guy stood out, so we took a pic. Only now do we realise that he was the only toadlet in a throng of froglets. Luckily for him... he didn't end up in my cauldron winky.

I haven’t posted any photos for some time as I’ve been too busy but decided to start a thread
on my ongoing project of creating a wildlife pond with bog area. It’s around 9m long and 5m wide
at the widest. The ground rises towards the tractor shed, this is the area where I will have the
bog section but due to the rise in land levels will still need to be dug out by around 450mm - 18”.
At the end nearest the house it will have to be dug out to around 1m – 3`. I hope to plant
Bog Bean, Marsh Cinquefoil. Water Avens, Marsh Valarium, Common Reed, Brook Like,
Purple Loosestrife, Marsh Marigold, Meadow Sweet, Wood rush, & various Sedges all of which are in
tubs waiting to be planted. I would also like to bet some Flowering Rush & Burr Reed if I can find any
and get the seed to germinate, not always easy.

Early stages after a heavy rain last summer, the ground falls down to the house & when planting
the Blackthorn hedge which is behind the wire to protect it from rabbits I put a drain under
the hedge to feed the pond.

In May I discovered Keith next door was getting a digger in to dig out the base of his new hay shed
so I’ve taken of most of the turf & dug out the larger blocks of concrete, which will become a climbing
area for the lambs when I decide where to put them. The remainder of the spoil will become a raised
mound to the right of the garage going u to the hedge possibly with some trees on it & more wild flowers
& the area between the garage & the hedge will become another r wildlife area which will be inaccessible
to my gourmet sheep who have a liking for most things I don’t want them to eat. I’ll get back to that
thread when we have some rain & more things start to grow.
I’ll update this thread as work proceeds but I don’t expect plants to be settled in till next summer.
Who knows I may have a heron 20` from my office window. Hopefully it will attract a few new birds &
insects such as Grey Wagtails, Warblers, possibly Reed Buntings & Dragonflies & Damselflies.
