Big Cat News - Monday 21 July 2008

-----------------------Big Cat Goes Live! -----------------------

Big Cat returns this autumn, but in an exciting new guise. For the first time in its 12 year history, Big Cat will be broadcast as a live event on the web and on TV, bringing the thrum of the African wilderness to your desktop and living rooms 24/7 for three weeks. From late September, when the recce and filming begin, the crew will start to upload regular field reports on the feline and other animal stars direct to the website via mobile phone. We'll bring you special video reports about the animals, people and place, building up to a fully live, round-the-clock experience on the website a week before the TV show begins. Streaming wildlife webcams will reveal the hidden lives of Africa's favourite - and some lesser known - creatures. There'll be scheduled appointments to view including live reports from the presenters and others, as well as opportunities for you to contribute.

----------------------------On TV----------------------------

All this and you haven't even turned on the TV yet... At the peak of activity, a week of live, night-time broadcasts on BBC One and Two bring the event to a climax, with even the smallest viewers catered for in a special CBeebies series. As plans shape up over the next few months, we'll keep you posted so you can join us on the first ever virtual Big Cat safari. Until then, all the best! The Big Cat teamNo message is selected

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bfQZk8V1p7c

Not particularly graphic, but... worth watching.

The person who filmed it obviously has a close relationship with the squirrel and the fact that squirrels (by their very nature) are shy creatures (ok.. *some* :giggle: ) but more so when it is a pregnant female.
Usually, they hide to give birth in some really remote drey that they feel totally safe with. I figure the squirrel in this video really can feel at ease to want to give birth on someones windowsill! :D
(check out the position of her backpaws against the screen at the back of the window.. and the moment she licks the window)

It certainly unveiled some of the mysteries around a squirrels birth... born blind, bald and helpless... and totally dependant on their mother :D

I didn't know that they gave birth in such perculiar positions... but the one endearing thing about it is the mother and how wonderful and gentle she is...

Just a really quick post to let anyone interested know that one of the ospreys at Loch Garten has just fledged this morning. She is in a nearby tree and you can watch by following the link if you would like to. The other chick, a male, is expected to follow suit in the next couple of days. They will still fly to and from the nest for a time while they hone their flying skills and the parents will continue to bring food to them there so you will be able to still see them for another couple of weeks. I'm sooooo excited. Catch you all later. :encore: :encore: :encore:

I posted a thread a few weeks back about the possible rats in the garden. However, after doing some research I came to the conclusion it was hedgehogs, not thinking that any other type of mammal would inhabit the area around our garden! But today after returning from holiday, my mum and sister told me they had seen a long brown and beige 'thing' running up and down the garden quite fast. It then darted behind our wall feature when it started raining. My sister then told me that while it was raining a larger mammal of the same description came out from between the back wall of the feature and the fence.

Now im wondering whether all the rustling sounds ive been hearing in the night etc have been a family of weasels, stoats or ferrets. Is it possible that they have a den behing the wall? Which of the three mentioned is it most likely to be? And what should I do if I see them again?

Any help would be fantastic XD FANKS ;)
They came back frequently and the whole family took much pleasure in watching their antics. What a lovely surprise. Apparently they are still resident on the island.

I have taken some photo's but it is my daughters new camera so may take a day or two to upload them onto the computer.

Unfortunately Simon King was nowhere to be seen though. I even looked with my binoculars, but he is obviously rarer than the red squirrels or didn't want to come out to play! :hmmm:

Even as i type i get emotional over these beautiful masterpieces.
Very few are old. Most tall ships are metal-hulled and built in the last 30 or so years.
This year the event runs out from the european city of culture - Liverpool.
Tall Ships
If you ever have a chance to see the event - whether it be this year in Liverpool or from another port in any other year - then GO!
I have loved sailing ships for, roughly, 3 decades.
They bring out a passion in me that stems from a deep-seated family history. Shame that, like Horatio Nelson, i suffer from mal-de mer!
The main organisers, along with respective ones from various other nations, are the Tall Ships Youth Trust Tall Ships Youth Trust - pompey, formerly known as the Sail Training Association.

And if you of any youngster who'd benefit from joining one of the ship then point them in the right direction. It will benefit them greatly. I had the luck to go many many moons ago for my 18th birthday present. Then, i went again a few less moons ago. I've been to the event a few times. London, Milford Haven and Waterford and took part when the event ran out from Leith (edinburgh).
they leave you with treasurable memories!
Many ships have been used on the television. TS Roaylist (cadet brig) is a popular one as she's marked in B&W checks. For those a little older you may remember watching The Onedin Line. In her was a vessel called Charlotte Rose. In real life she is Sorlandet.
The irish have the beautiful Asgard II. The russians have the biggest in Sedov and Kruzschenstern. Sometimes the american coastguard barque Eagle will appear.
there are plenty of brits to spot flying the Red Duster inc. Lord Nelson who takes the disabled as well as abled tho this started with Sorlandet a long time ago!
This schooner Oosterschelde has the most beautiful wooden interior and they are a very welcoming crew - but then i have a soft spot for the dutchies .
Enough!
Go if you can. watch it you can.
Or dream!

they leave you with treasurable memories!
Or dream!

Hi, as some of you may be aware I am involved with our local badger rescue group here in Cornwall. I thought some of you may be interested in some pics of one of our rescues which took place Wednesday...

Bob called me and asked if I could help him transport a young badger from the vets to our holding pens. We have several large pens built for badgers, but we also will take in any animal really that needs help.

She is a one year old female and was found trapped between two houses in St Austell.

She had been hit by a car...

and had sustained injuries to her bottom lip and had a recent bite make to her rear..

we will keep her till she is ready for release..

as you can see although she was coming round from her examination she was still a handful..

The vets said she will make a full recovery adn we will be keeping a close eye on her each day...

So everytime I tell people this they think Im bragging,
but its only because Im really proud...

My step dad and I havent always seen eye to eye, but one
thing we have ALWAYS had in common is our love for animals.
He had an odd start to life, he chose not to go to school, but since then hes pulled his socks up and really made something of himself!
Up until the start of this year he was the owner of a really sucessful
car parts business but he realised franchise are taking over so sold
up!

He's still the MD of the company but most of his time
is spent in Cornwall where he owns an apartment with my
mum!

His power has ALWAYS been BLAGGING his way into things
and so when he met Richard Pierce, a man who owns a shark diving
company and is a shark expert from Cornwall, he spotted an
opportunity not to be missed!

He blagged his way onto a shark diving trip in Kuwait!
and now has been offered a permanent place in Richards
business!

So at almost 42, my step dad is going to retire, move
to Bude with my mum and live out his days studying
sharks! How cool is that?

Here is a link to Richards site...
Peirce Shark Conservation!

He in Cornwall at the mo...
Doing goodness knows what, but I think Im going to
get him to write a blog for us here on FoN because
I dont know about you but id LOVE to hear what he's
up to! :cool1:
